Even for companies with massive R&D output, targeted deals with SEP-focused research labs seem to fit a strategic need.
Samsung is already the world’s biggest patent owner, as measured by IAM’s annual ranking with ktMINE of the top holders of US grants. The covid-19 crisis, it seems, is doing nothing to dent the massive investments in R&D that have powered the South Korean company to the top of that list.
In financial disclosures this week, Samsung revealed that it has spent north of $14 billion on research in the first nine months of 2020 – and that figure represents a record high for the company. The figure for the comparable period last year was less than $10 billion….
