Our History
From a single idea to three research labs shaping global standards
Ofinno started in 2011 with a small team focused on developing and patenting solutions for the next generation of cellular standards. Over the years, that work has expanded into Wi-Fi and media compression, scaled to thousands of patent filings, and attracted partnerships with some of the world’s largest technology companies. Here’s how it happened.
2011
Founded
Dr. Esmael Dinan founds Ofinno to research and patent solutions for the next generation of cellular standards.
2015
First Patent Transaction
One of the world’s largest handset manufacturers completes a major patent transaction with Ofinno, recognizing the early value of the portfolio.
2017
First Joint R&D Partnership
Ofinno launches its first R&D partnership, giving an operating company early access to review and select patent assets from Ofinno’s cellular standards research.
2018
200+ Inventions Filed in a Single Year
Ofinno files more than 200 patent applications for new inventions in one year — a sign of the research program hitting its stride.
2019
1,000th Patent Filing
Ofinno files its 1,000th patent application, every one originating from its own engineering team.
2020
Expanding into Media Standards
Ofinno establishes a Video Compression research team to contribute to next-generation coding standards through MPEG and JVET.
2022
First License Agreement & Wi-Fi Launch
Ofinno signs its first patent license for its LTE portfolio and launches a dedicated Wi-Fi research team focused on IEEE 802.11, adding a third technology pillar.
2024
5G Licensing Launch & 400+ Inventions
Ofinno launches its 5G licensing program and surpasses 400 patent filings for new inventions in a single year, doubling its 2018 pace as research expands across all three technology areas.
2025
700+ Patent Families Transacted
Ofinno surpasses 300 sold patent families through individual transactions and 400 provisional families through R&D partnerships.
2026
