During a recent Lunch & Learn, Weihua Qiao presented on the topic of “Smart Railway Stations.” A Smart Railway Station uses different types of electronic Internet of Things (IoT) sensors to collect data to improve efficiency, mobility and sustainability. The premise of this concept is to create a barrier and stress free experience for every passenger while fostering an eco-friendly, efficient operation. Some tools that are utilized for this concept are drones to quickly perform inspections, blue LED panels to calm agitated passengers, Artificial Intelligence (AI) in kiosks to enable security check-ins using face recognition and smart glasses to identify criminals. There are even smart robots that can deliver food and other items to passengers. This appears to be the exciting future of railway travel.
