Overview
Standards work rarely gives you a week where everything moves at once. Most sessions are incremental. Comments get resolved, contributions get heard, positions inch closer together. The July 2026 IEEE 802 Plenary in Montreal (Session #218, July 12-17) was not one of those sessions.
In the span of five days, the current generation of Wi-Fi cleared its most important ballot gate in two years, the 60 GHz project, Integrated mmWave (IMMW), moved to start writing its specification, and the next generation of Wi-Fi went from hallway conversation to chartered study group. Two generations of the technology and IMMW, each crossing a threshold in the same building in the same week.
Here is how it happened.
Wi-Fi 8: Eight Thousand Comments Later
To understand what Montreal meant for Wi-Fi 8, go back to the number that has defined the project since its first complete draft. The initial letter ballot on Draft 1.0 drew roughly 8,700 comments, about 6,250 of them technical and the remainder editorial, far more than Wi-Fi 7 drew at the same stage. Every one of them had to be resolved before the task group could produce Draft 2.0, the first draft to reflect the full weight of that feedback.
Our March readout reported the task group about 60% through the pile, with Draft 2.0 slipping from May to July. The open question was whether July would hold.
It held. In Montreal, the task group approved all remaining resolutions from ballot LB291 and the working group voted to send Draft 2.0 to a 30-day ballot beginning in early August. The vote in the Wi-Fi 8 task group (TGbn) was 169 in favor, 6 against, 11 abstaining, as recorded in the final meeting minutes. Not unanimous, but about as close to consensus as a room of competing chipmakers, device vendors, and operators gets.
The vote does more than close a ballot cycle. It stabilizes the Wi-Fi 8 feature set. Non-Primary Channel Access, Dynamic Power Save, Coordinated Restricted Target Wake Time (Co-RTWT), and the new roaming framework are now locked into the draft. From here the process narrows into recirculation ballots, progressively smaller comment sets, and refinement rather than redesign.
The schedule pressure is real, and it comes from outside the room. The Wi-Fi Alliance is already defining Wi-Fi 8 certification requirements in parallel with the standards work. A slip in the ballot cycle ripples into the certification program and, eventually, into product roadmaps. Hitting the July gate keeps that machinery aligned.

Integrated mmWave: The Week the Talking Stopped
For the past year, the Integrated mmWave project has been a story of accumulating contributions and unresolved architecture questions. Our readouts tracked the debates over how independent 60 GHz links should be, what the packet format should look like, and how devices should schedule access to a band that is not always on. Progress, but the kind measured in agreements-in-principle.
Montreal changed that. Published motion records show approximately 35 SFD motions passing in a single session. These were not narrow housekeeping motions. They covered the load-bearing pieces of the design, from the signal (SIG) field, preamble, and short training field (STF) structure to peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) requirements for 640 MHz operation, beam establishment procedures, on-demand scheduling, and peer-to-peer operation.
Then, within days of adjournment, a Draft 0.1 specification skeleton and a volunteer editing tracker appeared on the document server. That is the tell. A task group posting a spec skeleton and recruiting editors is a task group preparing to write draft text in parallel with its continued technical review. Drafting has not begun yet, but the scaffolding for it is now in place, and months of framework debate compressed into a single week.
Not everything is settled. Several design questions with real consequences remain open. One of them: what frame type should set up on-demand service periods? Contributions in the public record split between control frames and management frames, with active debate between major chipmakers. It sounds like a detail. It is not. The choice shapes latency, overhead, and implementation complexity for every on-demand mmWave session, and it is likely to be a focal point in Waikoloa this September.
For companies with mmWave positions, the message from Montreal is simple. The SFD text is accumulating fast now, and the cost of arriving late to a settled framework rises with every cycle.
Wi-Fi 9: A Name and a Charter
Every Wi-Fi generation begins the same way. It starts quietly, in the Wireless Next Generation (WNG) Standing Committee, as a series of contributions asking what problem the next standard should solve. Wi-Fi 8 started that way in 2022. Through the first half of 2026, our readouts tracked the same early signals for its successor, from performance target proposals in January to six more contributions in March and broadening participation from chipmakers to operators.
In Montreal, the quiet phase ended. The working group approved formation of the study group for the amendment that follows Wi-Fi 8, provisionally named WLAN Intelligent Networking, or WIN. Pending LMSC approval, the study group convenes at the September interim.
Study group work sounds procedural, and it is. The deliverables are the Project Authorization Request (PAR) and the Criteria for Standards Development (CSD), plus alignment on objectives, key performance indicators (KPIs), target frequency bands, and candidate technologies. But procedural is not the same as unimportant. These documents define what the eventual task group is allowed to work on. Features that do not fit the PAR do not get standardized. The scope written over the next few interims will constrain the next six years of Wi-Fi development.
Two signals from the session are worth reading closely. First, the appetite for extending Wi-Fi 8’s scope appears limited; new capability is being channeled toward WIN rather than bolted onto 802.11bn late in its cycle. Second, the provisional name is itself a statement. “Intelligent Networking” plants the next generation squarely in the AI-driven traffic and edge intelligence themes that have dominated WNG discussion all year, continuing the thread that began with the AI Offload Study Group we covered in March.
If the historical cadence holds, a study group forming in mid-2026 points to a task group around mid-2027 and a completed specification in the early 2030s. The window to shape what WIN becomes is open now, and it will not stay open long.
Ofinno at the Meeting
Ofinno participated as an active contributor across the Wi-Fi tracks in Montreal. Its impact was concentrated where the drafting is hottest, in TGbq. On an agenda oversubscribed with contributions, Ofinno secured five presentation slots. Ofinno has brought three SFD motions to TGbq, all passed unanimously: two at the May 2026 meeting and the third in Montreal. Ofinno’s contributions are concentrated in medium access control (MAC) and joint MAC/physical layer (PHY) topics, which places its work at the center of the scheduling and service period questions that will dominate the next several TGbq cycles.
In TGbn, the shift to recirculation balloting opens a new phase of engagement. Ofinno will submit technical comments in the Draft 2.0 ballot beginning in August and participate in comment resolution at the September interim.
